Weight loss to treat fatty liver
Mentioning that many people have different grades of fatty liver, he added, “Fatty liver does not have a definitive drug yet. Although some drugs such as vitamin D and diabetes medications are prescribed, the treatment relies on balancing the energy consumption, lowering the insulin level, and reducing body weight. Weight loss treats fatty liver, but it should occur gradually, not suddenly."
A misconception about fatty liver
Explaining the causes of fatty liver, he said, “Fatty liver is caused by low mobility, overweight, excessive consumption of sugar and carbohydrates, and a high insulin level. It can also be caused by excessive consumption of natural fruit juice, soft drinks, and other sugars."
Noting a misconception about fatty liver, he added, “People mistakenly believe that only sugars cause fatty liver and the natural sugar in fruits is not harmful. But this is a misconception because fructose, which is the main fruit sugar, is a common cause of fatty liver. The liver uptakes fructose and creates lipid droplets that eventually lead to fatty liver.”
He stated, “Fatty liver is the consequence of an imbalance in the consumption of glucose (sugar) and simple carbohydrates, and following a Mediterranean diet can help treat this condition. Vegetables are low in calorie and high in fiber content, and can help treat fatty liver.”
