Dosage and administration:
Doctors decide the dosage to be taken, but the usual dose for type 2 diabetes treatment, along with exercise and diet, is as follows. Metformin can be used as a single-drug therapy or together with other blood glucose-lowering medications.
The dose starts at 500 mg every 12 hours, or 850 mg/day with a meal. This dose can be increased to 500 mg a week or 850 mg every two weeks depending on the blood glucose control level.
Maintenance dose: 1500-2550 mg/day in divided doses with an interval of 8-12 hours with meals
The maximum daily dose of metformin is 2550 mg.
Side effects:
Any medication may cause adverseeffects in addition to its desired therapeutic effects. Although not everybody shows all the side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you observe them:
Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, bloating, weakness, chills, muscle pain, upper respiratory infections, blood glucose drop, drop in vitamin B12 level, drowsiness, constipation, heartburn, indigestion.
Lactic acidosis is among the most important and rare side effects of metformin and requires immediate and serious attention.
Contraindications:
Do not take metformin in the following cases:
Allergy to the medication
Heart failure
Diabetic ketoacidosis with or without coma
Severe renal disease: ( eGFR<30 mL/min/1.73 m²)
Abnormal creatinine clearance rate due to shock, septicemia, or myocardial infarction
Breastfeeding
